Feeling frustrated at all the little "bickerings" that were going on amongst my three children; you know all those little "hurtful" things that are said to siblings. I decided to teach them a lesson on the importance of words. We took a little excursion to the local Walmart`s to buy them each a tube of toothpaste. If you are "thrifty" the trial size works fine! We got home and, of course, they wanted to know just what the toothpaste was for. I gave them each their own tube and over a sheet of paper they were instructed to squeeze out the entire tube of toothpaste. Eagerly they squeezed and squeezed until the last drop. When they were finished, I simply told them now they had to put all the toothpaste back into the tube. They looked at me foolishly as if to say, "Mom, that`s impossible!" Which is the exact reaction I wanted. I went on to explain that is just like our "words." It is so easy to spurt them out, carelessly and thoughtlessly, but once the words are out; words can never be taken back.
Often times now whenever they are tempted to just spout out some hurtful thing, I remind them of the toothpaste and they choose their words more wisely.
